HARMONI

India Pale Ale (IPA)

6.4% ABV | 30 IBU

Like the name, this IPA is a harmonious balance between malts and hops. We thoughtfully combined an array of malts and six different hop varieties, arriving at a biscuity, slight caramel malt base bursting with juicy passionfruit, peach and pineapple hop aromas.

One of our guiding ideas behind Tenggara Brewing is the feeling of being present in a unique location and experiencing all that surrounds it.

We started our journey in Jakarta so for this can illustration, we paid homage to an iconic J-Town vehicle, the blue bajaj. A bajaj outside a bustling pasar full of fresh local fruit produce can overwhelm the senses. That’s what we’re going for with one of our first releases, both with the can art and most importantly, the beer itself.

LIMELIGHT

Lime Gose

4.8% ABV | 8 IBU

A Gose is a traditional German-style wheat sour. Its tartness is complemented by an herbal coriander addition and a slightly salty water profile. We stuck to these traditions but also added local lime. The result is a light hazy refreshing sour with a burst of zesty lime and a pinch of salinity for elevated flavours.

We consider ourselves to be storytellers at heart (although sometimes Leon’s tales have been known to go off on rambling tangents).

One of the traditional ways of sharing Indonesian cultural fables is through wayang (shadow puppetry). We wanted this can to capture our unique wayang story, a marriage of fruit and beer with the local lime cheekily stealing the show.

BUZZED

Summer Honey Wheat Ale

4.9% ABV | 12 IBU

Buzzed is a modern American wheat ale with a local honey addition. It’s a light bodied thirst quencher with citrus aromatics from hops, but the focus is on the golden nectar of the bees which fully ferments out to give subtle floral notes and a clean, refreshingly dry finish.

We’ve adventurously incorporated local ingredients into our small scale brews  since early 2018 and one of the first beers we brewed was this style. 6 years on, our third Tenggara beer, Buzzed, is released into the wild.

We’ve often gone out on a limb trying different sources and varieties of honey since that first batch. Wild honey also is the spontaneous product of its local environment, so we’ve portrayed that on the label. The golden hues evoke a sense of summer, warmth, sunshine and, of course, the honey.

O’MERAH

Indo-Irish Red Ale

4.9% ABV | 17 IBU

As a little splash of Indonesia in an Irish Red Ale, this is a beer we hold dear to our heart. It’s a tribute to the community that Tenggara emerged from. We crafted a light toffee/ruby coloured malt foundation and then added a dash of Javanese cardamom (kapulaga) and a pinch of Papuan vanilla for a hint of sweet citrus and minty pine. It’s a malt forward yet easy drinking ale with a beguilingly familiar aroma.

The label depicts a streetscape similar to the one out the front of the original location where we shared the first iteration of O’Merah on August 17th, 2018, but it could really be anywhere in the archipelago, where our beer is shared, discussed and enjoyed.

Featured are many of the friends of Tenggara who provided generous encouragement (and consumption) from the earliest days of our home-brewing in Jakarta.

And the name? Well, it’s our own little Indo-Irish pun.
